Large Gold Nugget found near Dunolly
4th. November 2002 -- The uncleaned gold nugget is shown below shortly after having been found and then shown above after it had been rinsed in cold water. After cleaning the nugget weighed 96.48 troy ounces. This lucky prospector has been coming to Dunolly for the past ten years and this this is his biggest find so far. This was found today the Monday of the 4 day Melbourne Cup long weekend (for some) and so far he is already on a winner even though the Cup is not run until tomorrow (Tuesday). Our customer told us he discovered this nugget at an approximate depth of 3 feet in hardened red clay in a sparsely treed area. The 3 hours he spent digging this nugget was worth the effort he claimed. The spot the nugget was found is within 5 minutes drive of the Dunolly Township.
