A number of Clune's features stand to this day reminding the visitor that Clunes is a town living in it's history.
Aboriginal and pastoral settlements were all that occupied Clunes until 1851. It was that year Donald Cameron, a Scotsman, made Victoria's very first gold strike on his homestead in the Clunes valley.
In 1855 the Port Phillip and Colonial Gold Mining Company negotiated an agreement to mine on Cameron's original pastoral run.
Gold was found in quartz reefs and brought many people into the town. Commercial development started in Lower Fraser Street in the late 1860's and residential development stayed close to the mines.
In the late 1860's and early 1870's, institutional buildings were erected including the town hall, churches, post office and telegraph office.
