Castlemaine
Hub of the Mount Alexander Region.

The Historic Castlemaine market
The Mount Alexander Shire Office is situated at Castlemaine just 120 kilometres north-west of Melbourne via the Calder highway. Renowned for the arts, Castlemaine is a relaxed place with a sophisticated feel in a stately 19th century setting. Broad avenues and mature European gardens fit hand in glove with the primarily Victorian and Edwardian architecture.
Castlemaine first gained notoriety in the 1850’s when it attracted the attention of the world as the richest shallow alluvial goldfield the world had ever seen. Today the town is graced with stunning gardens, gracious buildings, and stately boulevards as a legacy of the earth bound riches of yesteryear.
The major towns within the Shire of Mount Alexander, Castlemaine and Maldon are renowned for their gold mining heritage as well as their streetscapes and building styles The many small towns and settlements in the region also display their rich past from the roaring days of the early Victorian Gold Rushes.
Set amid rolling hills and a labyrinth of valleys and gullies, you’ll sense an air of discovery as you travel through small townships in the region including Chewton, Fryerstown, Guildford, Harcourt, Newstead, Taradale and Vaughan.
The region is now known for its developed tastes. It is renowned for its pursuit of the arts and has become home to approximately 400 practicing artists. Great food and wine experiences are a highlight in the region, with sidewalk dining, cafes and choice wineries.
Visitors are well catered for with many B&B’s, motels, caravan parks, and self-contained cottages to rest their weary bones. While the galleries, cafés, restaurants, antiques and collectables, historic homes and wineries of the surrounding district offer something for all tastes.
