Visitors guide to Dunolly

Dunolly is a delightful small Australian country town situated in the Central Goldfields region of the State of Victoria just twenty five kilometres north of Maryborough. Being located in the heart of the famous Golden Triangle the township has a stable population of some 750 residents and is very popular with gold prospectors as the surrounding goldfields have long been the home of the worlds largest Gold Nugget finds. In its heyday of the 1850's and 60's it was a large metropolis with a population of more than 45,000 people who in one way or another were attracted to the area by the lure of gold.

Dunolly is also an important wheat and grain handling center with grain being railed and trucked into it's rail terminal from all the Central Victorian wheat growing areas. Dunolly is the rail head where the Victorian State gage railway and the Australian Standard gage rail line meet, of which the latter connects to the States major wheat shipping terminals at Geelong and Portland. The old wheat silo at Dunolly which was demolished late last century was the largest roofed area in the Southern hemisphere. Today the wheat is stored in bunkers at ground level and covered with plastic sheeting.

Local arts and crafts are also usually on display and for sale within the township and surrounding areas.
